Socontra: replicate Shopify’s 5+ Million online stores as Web Agents for automated online shopping

Agentic startup Socontra has released templates to help developers replicate Shopify’s existing 5+ million online stores as Web Agents. Web Agents facilitate automated online shopping by transacting with other AI agents (bots) acting on behalf of consumers. Shopify Web Agents* and consumer AI agents can find, connect and transact using Socontra’s agent social network and protocols specifically designed for automated commercial transactions.

In recent months, the emerging area of agentic commerce has accelerated with backing from major payment platforms like Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Stripe. However, there are technological shortfalls to enable fully automated shopping which is both scalable and reliable to realize the future agent economy.

Socontra’s founder and CEO, Dr Don Perugini said “On one hand, you have agent integration tools like Anthropic’s MCP and Google’s A2A which facilitate human-driven chat-based shopping experiences for consumers. However, to fully automate shopping, the ‘chat’ for implementing the complete transaction needs to be agent-driven, conducted on behalf of consumers. You still need standardized protocols with a legal framework to facilitate reliable and scalable commercial transactions between AI agents.”

“On the other hand, you have web-browsing AI agents that can navigate websites and perform actions on behalf of consumers, like making online purchases. However, these browser bots are slow, unreliable and not scalable. Imagine the bot accidentally entering sensitive credit card or customer data into the wrong unsecure text box on a webpage. Standardized protocols that directly and securely exchange data between agents, with a shared understanding of the type of data that is being exchanged, are more efficient, secure, reliable and scalable.” said Dr Perugini.

The future of the agentic economy in general faces the “cold start problem”. Agentic commerce is a two-sided market of buyers (consumer AI agents) and sellers (Web Agent online stores). Its essentially a “chicken and egg” situation where without buyers there is little incentive for developers to build AI agent for sellers, and vice versa.

To stimulate and accelerate the creation of the agentic economy, Socontra introduced a developer incentive model to financially benefit both sides of the two-sided market. Each commercial transaction between buyer and seller conducted over the Socontra network attracts a small transaction fee to the end-user of the seller agent. Socontra’s incentive model distributes 25% of this fee to the developer of the AI agent app representing the buyer and 25% to the developer of the AI agent app representing the seller.

“Just like the internet created the web development and SaaS industries in the 1990s and 2000s, we want the right incentives, framework and templates to create the future AI and Web Agent development industry needed to achieve the agentic economy sooner,” said Dr Perugini.

* Shopify currently enforces manual purchase of checkout items using the online store website. All other aspects of the transaction, including product search, adding to cart, removal from cart, purchase verification, and delivery, can be automated, as demonstrated in the Socontra Shopify templates.
